The Wine

Beyond The Dream is derived from a song title off of Phish’s most recent album, Sigma Oasis, which dropped right as the COVID-19 pandemic started. Its lyrics, filled with lines like “don't give up hope” and “keep dreaming,” really seemed to echo our feelings and inspired us through the last year or so. Also, the song is just simply beautiful. We feel this wine also has a ton of beauty and reflects the amazing potential we’ve found from the Cassin Vineyard in the far western reaches of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.

Kate and Tom are longtime friends of Joe and Julie Cassin, owners of the Cassin Vineyard in the coastal foothills west of McMinnville. Their vineyard, on a rare strip of Yamhill Jory soils, has demonstrated both a unique and dynamic ability to express terroir in its youth and has produced some fantastic Pinot noirs to date. Tom and Kate have forged a long-term lease relationship of the vineyard and made this wine specifically for the Auction from their favorite barrels of Cassin from the classic and lovely 2019 vintage.

Learn more about this lot during Preview Week (July 26–30) when winemaker Kate Norris will present this wine during a virtual tasting session on July 28. Register here.

The Winery

Division Winemaking Company is a Portland, Oregon–based winery founded in 2010 by Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe. Inspired by the wineries of Loire, Beaujolais, Burgundy and the Northern Rhône where they first learned winemaking and viticulture, the urban winery creates Oregon and Washington wines including Pinot noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and several more varieties. Determined to make approachable and balanced wines though minimal manipulation, the winemakers have a passion to work with well-farmed, terroir-expressive vineyards, many of which are organic and/or biodynamic, celebrating the varieties the winemakers love to drink. Division Winemaking Company includes the flagship Division label, the more approachable Division-Villages label, the Gamine brand inspired by the Rhône Valley and a personal expression of cofounder Kate Norris’s love of the region, as well as Tom’s Nightshade project focused on the best Nebbiolo vineyards of the Pacific Northwest.
